Fun Run - 1 Mile

Scott running the one miler fun run with his buddy from school. I think the Christmas socks made him run really fast. He got a medal for completing the mile, which made an impression on him - I think we may have a future track competitor in the family. 

MGES music and art night

We had a good time at the music and art night program at Scott's school. The 1st grade classes sang 4 songs for us, and Scott had a line in the first one. (I tried to upload the 2 minute video of that song, but it is too large for blogger.com, sorry!) These are pictures from the fun stuff in the library. Scott enjoyed all of the pretend things and made his own mustache. Meg walked up to the very first bookshelf and said, "I want to read!" She was disappointed that we were unable to finish a whole shelf before we had to go, and the librarian even gave her a book to take home. Other projects included Lego's and build your own rocket. Fun night!

Notice that Meg's mouth is so full that she cannot speak to me or even smile... need to keep an eye on how many eggs she is opening while putting them in her basket. 

The darn squirrels got to several of the eggs. I hope they have terrible squirrel stomach aches!

Spring Break in Arizona - 5 of 5

Another great day at the Grand Canyon, and we went end to end of the area accessible by road on the south rim. Great views from Hermit's Rest, where we had victory ice cream sandwiches after doing about a 3 mile hike. Equally great, but different views from Desert View at the other end of the park where we went up the watch tower. Beautiful day!

Spring Break - bonus video

This is a video filmed by Scott during our hike on the Rim Trail. It's a bit unstable at first, but then he settles in, and he gets very excited about seeing the animal tracks right at the end.

Spring Break in Arizona - 4 of 5

This was a really big hiking day for us - we went to 3 National Parks/Monuments: Sunset Crater Volcano, Wupatki, and Walnut Canyon. We had great weather and good paths. The crater was really interesting. Even though the eruption was about 1,000 years ago the effects of the lava flow and cinder coverage are quite evident. It was an interesting hike.  The picture below is looking away from the volcano, towards the other peaks in the distance.

The picture below occurred right after I said, "You know, Meg, if you pick your feet up a little bit and don't scuff them on the ground you won't get rocks in your shoes." I guess she took my advice to heart.

We saw a gopher snake on our way into Walnut Canyon. 

We could not believe that Meg hiked the WHOLE way through Walnut Canyon - 240 stairs each direction, and all the way around the "island" pictured above and shown on the map below. The adults consulted before the hike and opted for it, because we agreed that one of us would carry Meg out, but she did not need any help. At one point along the hike Meg saw a lady wearing hiking boots and commented on how cool her shoes were, so I described what they were and that Mommy and Daddy both had hiking shoes, but we were wearing sneakers today. Meg wants a pair for her next birthday, preferably purple. The ranger was so impressed when we got to the top back at the gift shop that she gave Meg a Junior Ranger badge on the spot, without the need to complete the workbook.
